€119m cocaine haul seized in boat raid

Cocaine worth €119m was seized in a high-seas raid on a boat, Spanish officials said today.

Police arrested two people on the boat and five others in the Basque city of Bilbao, and confiscated 1.5 metric tons of cocaine, the Interior Ministry said.

A ministry statement said the boat had set sail from the Dominican Republic and was bound for Spain’s Basque region.

The statement did not say when or where the seizure took place. Police were not immediately available for comment.

Spain is one of Europe’s main entry points for cocaine smuggled from South America.
