Dutch MP escapes prosecution on Koran film

Right-wing Dutch MP Geert Wilders is not to be prosecuted over his film denouncing the Koran, it was announced today.

Public prosecutors said the film and statements Wilders wrote in Dutch newspapers were hurtful and insulting but were not criminal.

They said Wilders made his anti-Muslim remarks in the context of a legitimate debate, and he could not be charged for incitement or discrimination.

Wilders said he was not surprised by the decision because he had stayed within the boundaries of the law.

Wilders’ film, titled “Fitna,” appeared on the Internet in March. It aroused protests around the Muslim world.
