Terror suspect goes on trial in Canada

The trial of the first man to be charged under Canada’s Anti-Terrorism Act began today.

Momin Khawaja, a 29-year-old software developer, is accused of participating in an al-Qaida-inspired cell that plotted bombings in Britain.

He faces seven counts of terrorist-related offences that could put him in prison for life if convicted.

Khawaja was named in connection with the plot in a London case that was thwarted, but he was not charged in the UK.

He was arrested in March 2004, and his trial is expected to last at least six months.
