The ministry gave the number in a statement before a news conference Sunday.

The official death toll from the May 12 earthquake has reached more than 60,000, with the government saying it could surpass 80,000.

Cabinet spokesman Guo Weimin told the news conference the death toll has risen to 62,644 from the earthquake and that another 23,775 people are still missing.

An aftershock hit Sichuan province this morning that could be felt in Beijing.
