UN officials declared Burma’s stricken Irrawaddy delta a “major, major disaster” today and warned that the death toll from the weekend’s cyclone could rise “dramatically”.

International aid began trickling into the devastated country today, but much of the Irrawaddy delta, where most of Cyclone Nargis’s 22,464 victims died, remained cut off from the world.
