Zimbabwe's opposition reunites and declares majority

Zimbabwe's divided opposition movement has formally reunited and is declaring that it has a majority in parliament.

Movement for Democratic Change president, Morgan Tsvangirai, and his former rival Arthur Mutambara appeared at a joint press conference in South Africa today to announce that president Robert Mugabe's party is now in the minority.

The partial recount of results from Zimbabwe's Electoral Commission confirms that the opposition does have a parliamentary majority. But the final tally was not announced today, as had been expected. Presidential results are still outstanding.

Mr Tsvangirai said that his party wants to work with former finance minister Simba Makoni, the third presidential candidate. He said it would also approach sympathetic ZANU-PF politicians.
