Biggest polluters fail to agree climate targets

Climate negotiators from the world’s biggest polluters have failed to agree on specific goals for cutting emissions of gases that cause global warming.

The French host of a Climate Talks meeting between the countries, Jean-Pierre Jouyet, said the 16 countries would hold two more meetings in May and June.

They are working towards an agreement before their leaders meet in Japan in July.

Mr Jouyet said differences over medium-term emissions cuts “dominated” two days of climate talks that ended in Paris last night.

He said no quantitative goals were set and cited differences between the US and EU positions.

Participants have estimated it would cost a staggering €126bn a year to fight the effects of climate change in the coming years.
