19 schoolchildren die in school blaze

Ugandan police said 19 primary school children aged between seven and ten burned to death with two of their matrons when their dormitory caught fire last night.

Ugandan police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba said police were investigating the cause of the fire at Buddo junior school.

The school is eight miles from the capital, Kampala.

School worker James Kiiza said the doors to the dormitory were locked from the outside and there was no electricity during the time of the fire.

He said workers have been on strike for more than a month because they have not been paid.
