Kangaroo slaughter stopped

A public outcry has halted the planned cull of 400 kangaroos on a disused military base near Canberra.

The Australian Defence Department said it has asked the state government to approve a trial of relocating the animals instead.

It said “the trial would deliver scientific evidence relating to translocation, assist the protection of endangered ecological communities and threatened species, and inform the debate on humane management of eastern grey kangaroos.”

The kangaroos on the former naval base were going to be killed because they have become too numerous and are at risk of starvation.
