US Navy admits shooting incident

The US Navy has confirmed that an American cargo ship working for it opened fire on Egyptian boats while transiting the Suez canal.

Egyptian authorities say the incident resulted in one death and two injured.

The US 5th Fleet said in a statement the “Motor Vehicle Global Patriot” fired warning shots late on Monday at several small boats while awaiting transit after they ignored verbal and radio instructions to turn away.

The US Navy said the incident is under investigation.

Egyptian naval and security authorities said that when a small motor boat approached the “Global Patriot” after dark on Monday to sell it cigarettes and other products, someone on the ship opened fire, killing one man, Mohammed Fouad and injuring two others.
