Glasgow Airport blaze suspect extradited to UK

An Albanian man suspected of torching a plane at Glasgow Airport has been extradited to Scotland, it emerged tonight.

The 35-year-old man was arrested under warrant in relation to an attempted fire attack in January 2005.

The BMI 49-seater aircraft was set alight at Glasgow Airport around 4am on January 22 by an intruder who is thought to have scaled a security fence to get on to the runway.

The blaze prompted a full security search.

Nobody was injured in the incident but the empty aircraft suffered minor damage to a rear window.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: “Following an incident at Glasgow Airport in 2005 a 35-year-old man has been arrested under warrant and is expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday.”

It is understood the detained man had been living in Ireland prior to his arrest.
