Possible third hidden chamber at Jersey home: Police

British Police searching a former Jersey care home for human remains today said there may be a third hidden underground chamber.

Officers have excavated one bricked up underground room at Haut de la Garenne and are working to get access to a second.

They said former workers at the home have contacted them to say they remember a third cellar chamber.

The Haut de la Garenne is at the centre of a major child abuse investigation involving more than 160 victims and 40 suspects going back to the 1960s.

Victims have claimed the underground rooms were used to abuse children.

On Saturday a child’s skull was discovered at the site.

The specially trained sniffer dog behind that discovery gave an “extremely strong reaction” to an area in the first chamber when it was opened up yesterday.

A police spokesperson said: “We have been contacted by people who used to work here who have told us there may be a third chamber.

“So far we have not found any evidence of that.

“We don’t anticipate going in to the second chamber until the first one is completely cleared.”
