A former Guantanamo Bay detainee wanted by Spanish authorities for terror-related offences was granted bail when he appeared before a British judge today.

Jamil El-Banna was arrested hours after returning to the UK following his release from the US Guantanamo Bay detention centre.

The 45-year-old British resident appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London. He was granted bail of £50,000 (€69,337) by Senior District Judge Timothy Workman.

He was arrested early this morning under a European arrest warrant alleging terrorist-related offences, issued on behalf of the Spanish authorities.
