Doctors today called for the fortification of flour with folic acid in a bid to cut pregnancy defects.

Writing in The Lancet, experts from the UK Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus claimed that adding the vitamin to the foodstuff could cut the number of pregnancies affected by neural tube defect, otherwise known as spina bifida, by around 400 a year.
