Italian roads were back to normal today after lorry drivers removed blockades and ended a three-day strike that brought the country to a standstill amid fuel and food shortages.

Unions called off the protest after reaching a deal last night with the government and truck drivers removed the vehicles they had lined up at toll booths and border points to protest over high fuel prices, long working hours and foreign competition.
