Putin heads for landslide victory

Russian president Vladimir Putin’s party was on course for a landslide victory tonight as early results showed they had clinched more than 60% of the vote.

The result in the parliamentary election could pave the way for Putin to retain effective political control of the country even when he steps down as president.
