Hopes fade for missing miners in Ukraine
Flags flew at half-staff nationwide today as grieving relatives prepared to bury victims of Ukraine’s worst mining disaster in years.
Flames, smoke and fallen rock hindered rescuers searching for several miners still missing after Sunday’s explosion, that left at least 80 miners dead. Hopes were fading that any could be found alive in the warren of tunnels at the Zasyadko mine beneath the eastern city of Donetsk, the heart of the former Soviet republic’s coal industry.
