Shamed Philippines President Joseph Estrada was free today for the first time in more than six years after his successor pardoned him from a life sentence for corruption.

“There is no substitute for freedom,” the 70-year-old former film star declared before leaving his villa near Manila, where he has spent most of his time in detention since his arrest in January 2001.
