250,000 flee California fires

More than a quarter of a million people have been evacuated and thousands of homes were at risk today as wild fires tore through southern California, US authorities said.

President George Bush declared an emergency overnight as temperatures looked set to increase and conditions worsen as the gusts of the Santa Ana wind fanning the blazes increase in strength.
