At least six people have been found dead in an apartment in Vancouver, police said.

The bodies of the adults were discovered by firefighters and hazardous materials workers responding to a reported gas leak, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl Dale Carr said.

“Upon arrival of fire and ambulance, it was quickly determined that they were not dealing with a gas leak but rather a homicide scene,” he said.

Police say they are not ruling out a homicide-suicide.

Police will investigate whether residents may have smelled decomposing bodies in the 15th floor apartment in Surrey, British Columbia, and mistakenly thought they had a gas leak, Carr said.

He could not immediately provide the ages or sex of the victims.

The building was evacuated but residents were being allowed to return last night.

Carr said investigators will have to interview residents of about 100 apartments in the building.
