Sharif arrested on arrival in Pakistan

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested on corruption charges today soon after his return from exile to Pakistan where he plans to lead a campaign against the US-allied military ruler who ousted him eight years ago, officials said.

Sharif did not resist as police officers led him from the VIP lounge at Islamabad airport, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.

Earlier, a senior investigator from Pakistan’s anti-corruption body served him a warrant related to money-laundering charges stemming from a sugar mill business several years ago.
