Israel opened a crossing with the Gaza Strip today to let in fuel, but hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remained without electricity because the European Union wouldn’t fund fuel shipments to a major power company, the fuel vendor said.

The power station’s Israeli fuel supplier said it was instructed by the European Union, which has been footing the fuel bill, not to deliver new supplies because the EU wouldn’t guarantee payment.
