Three killed in US mine accident

An accident at an air shaft under construction in a southern Indiana mine killed three people today, police said.

Crews were working to remove the bodies at Gibson County Coal after the late-morning accident, Sgt Jay Riley said.

The nature of the accident was not immediately clear, but authorities did not believe there had been a cave-in or an explosion.

Officials could not say how many people were in the mine at the time.
