Polish pilgrims killed in bus crash

A bus carrying Polish pilgrims back from a holy site in the French Alps left the road and crashed today, killing at least 14 people, firefighters said.

The accident occurred near the village of Vizille, near the city of Grenoble, on a steep descent.

Firefighters said the bus, carrying up to 52 people, suffered a problem with its brakes. It ploughed through a protective fence and fell into a river below the road.

The pilgrims were returning from the shrine of Notre-dame-de-la-Salette, about 25 miles south of Grenoble.
