China confirmed it has ordered the closure of a bi-lingual non-profit newsletter that tracked the development of civil society because its British founder was conducting illegal research.

A global media watchdog had urged China’s president not to force the closure of the China Development Brief, which until last week monitored efforts by international aid organisations and local non-government groups working on environment, health, labour and other issues.
