Police drop extension request on British car bombs suspect

Australian police today dropped a request to extend the detention of an Indian doctor over the failed British car bomb terror attacks.

But Muhammad Haneef, 27, was not likely to be released immediately and could still be charged.

Australian Federal Police withdrew their application to a magistrate to extend Haneef’s detention beyond today under anti-terror laws, a spokesman said.

The move means that police have 12 hours left to question Haneef before either charging or releasing him.
