12 killed, 50 injured in Egyptian bus crash

At least 12 Egyptians were killed and 50 injured when two buses collided head-on near the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh today.

The accident apparently occurred after one of the vehicles tried to overtake a car and slammed into the oncoming bus, said Said Issa, the chief of southern Sinai emergency unit.

Deadly road accidents are common in Egypt and tend to be blamed on poorly maintained vehicles, bad roads and a lack of respect for traffic regulations.

Police estimate that at least 6,000 are killed every year in car accidents.
