Spanish police find car filled with explosives

Spanish police have found a car containing 100 kilos of explosives, the Civil Guard said today.

A Civil Guard official said it was not known if the vehicle was linked to the armed Basque separatist group Eta, nor if it was rigged as a car bomb.

The car was found in the town of Ayamonte in south-west Huelva province, near the border with Portugal.

Cadena Ser radio quoted anti-terrorism officials as saying the car was linked to Eta, but not rigged as a bomb, just being used to transport the explosives.

Eta called off 15-month cease-fire earlier this month, blaming the government for a failed peace process and saying it was once again becoming "active on all fronts".

This was interpreted as signalling an imminent resumption of attacks, but so far there have not been any.
