Two shot in South African hostage standoff

Two people were shot and wounded in a hostage drama at a restaurant on a popular Cape Town street, police said tonight.

It is believed that a number of hostages, possibly four in total, were still being held at Nyoni's Kraal in Long Street.

Police spokeswoman Bernadine Steyn said one hostage sustained a leg injury when shots were fired. A woman passer-by had been hit by a stray bullet and taken to hospital.

Local media reported that the incident was sparked by a domestic dispute but Steyn would not comment on the motive, only saying: "That is still under investigation."

The incident began at about 10am (8am Irish time) and was continuing tonight.

Long Street, in the heart of Cape Town's tourist district, is well-known for its many bookstores and eateries as well as backpacker lodges and youth hostels.
