Madeleine suspect: It isn't me

The only main suspect in the case of missing Madeleine McCann said tonight he was on “tenterhooks” after police released a description of a man they wanted to question.

Robert Murat, who has strongly denied any involvement in the four-year-old’s abduction, insisted he was not the man wanted by the authorities.

“It isn’t me,” he said. “But the description is so vague that it won’t put me out of the picture.

“I hope that I will soon be in a position to clear my name.”

Mr Murat has been questioned by police but has not been charged although he still remains one of the leads in the inquiry.

His house, only 150 metres from where Madeleine was snatched has been searched by police, but the suspect is still living there with his mother.

Mr Murat has not been able to talk openly about the case because of Portuguese law.

“It has been almost two weeks since my life was turned upside down by these allegations and I am on tenterhooks about what will happen now they have released this,” he said.

“I am playing a waiting game,”

Madeleine’s father Gerry said anyone suspected in the case should be assumed innocent until convicted by a court.
