French voters are casting ballots today in a presidential election that offers a clear choice for the country’s future, with conservative Nicolas Sarkozy urging France to work more and Socialist Segolene Royal pledging to safeguard welfare protections.

Polling stations opened at 8am local time (7am Irish time), and results will be announced 12 hours later at 8pm (7pm Irish time).
