Three seriously hurt as trains collide in Belgium

Two trains have collided in western Belgium, leaving three people seriously injured.

The accident late yesterday happened when a train with no passengers ran into a commuter train at a platform in the western Belgian town of Izegem.

Three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries, and 48 others were treated for minor injuries or shock.

The accident caused substantial damage to the trains and the rail line, and disrupted the morning commute in the west Flanders region.

Frederic Petit, from Infrabel – the company responsible for railway maintenance - told VRT radio they hoped to have repairs to the line finished by Monday.
