Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today authorised the Israeli army to carry out limited operations in the Gaza Strip, but ruled out a large-scale ground offensive.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting that Mr Olmert held with senior security officials following a new round of rocket fire out of Gaza by Hamas militants.
