Car bomb strikes Iraqi TV station

Six Iraqi guards were wounded when a bomb struck a Sunni Muslim television station in Baghdad today.

The attack against the Baghdad TV station occurred at about 1.30pm local time when a parked vehicle exploded in front of the station in Baghdad’s western neighbourhood of Jami’a, said Mahmoud al-Obeidi of the Iraqi Islamic Party that owns the station.

Shortly after the explosion, the station went off the air, although a photo of a mosque with readings from the Koran, the Muslim holy book, appeared for a brief time.

Mr Al-Obeidi said the building was damaged along with several cars in the area.

Police said the vehicle used in the attack was a small truck used to collect rubbish. He said US and Iraqi troops had cordoned the area. The US military had no immediate comment.
