EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Iran’s top negotiator resumed discussions on Tehran’s nuclear enrichment programme almost immediately after the announcement that fifteen British sailors and marines would be released.

Although no breakthroughs were announced, the swift resumption of talks after the diplomatic crisis showed that the communication channels between the Mr Solana and Iran’s nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani were still intact.
