Syria says it is mediating in Britain’s dispute with Iran over 15 detained sailors and marines, news reports said today.

The sudden release of an Iranian diplomat missing for two months in Iraq raised new hope yesterday that the 15 British sailors and marines seized by Iran may soon be freed.
