About 200 students staged a violent protest outside the British Embassy in Tehran on today, throwing rocks and firecrackers.

However, police prevented any of the protesters from entering the Embassy compound.

There was an initial report that protesters had hurled petrol bombs, but a witness at the scene said he saw only rocks and firecrackers being thrown.

Police officers guarding the compound prevented the protesters from getting near the compound walls, the witness said.

Britain’s Foreign Office said there had been no damage to the compound. “There is a demonstration taking place at the embassy,” said a British Foreign Office spokeswoman in London. “No damage has been done to the embassy.”
