The African Union called on Zimbabwe to respect its citizens’ human rights today as it emerged that two opposition activists seeking medical treatment abroad after being beaten by police were among three detained trying to leave the country.

Arthur Mutambara, head of a faction of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change, was arrested by police at Harare International Airport as he was leaving for South Africa, said Roy Bennett, the movement’s exiled treasurer-general.
