Girl's hiccups stop after five weeks

An American girl who was plagued by hiccups for five weeks has finally been cured.

Jennifer Mee, 15, tried traditional remedies such as holding her breath, breathing into a bag and sipping pickle juice.

She also visited a string of doctors including an infectious disease specialist, a chiropractor, an acupuncturist and even a neurologist in a bid to solve the problem.

In the end the hiccups, which had been coming close to 50 times a minute, suddenly stopped of their own accord yesterday evening, as mysteriously as they had started.

“Right now, my nose is burning and my throat hurts,” Jennifer told Florida’s St Petersburg Times.

She said she felt a lot better than she has in weeks.

The hiccups began on January 23 and only stopped when she was sleeping.

She also tried a patented device designed to stop them and went to a hypnotist after appearing on national TV to try to get help.

Her mother, Rachel Robidoux, said: “She’s told me: ’Never use that word again’.

“Never say the H-word again.”
