A bus passing a vehicle in a mountainous region of central Brazil crashed head-on into an oncoming truck, killing 13 people and injuring 23, police said today.
The accident happened late last night near the historic city of Ouro Preto, about 800km (500 miles) north-east of Sao Paulo. Authorities were still trying to identify some of the victims, said a state highway police officer.
The bus had departed earlier from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state. The survivors were taken to hospitals, suffering from injuries ranging from light to serious, the officer said.
The cause of the crash appeared to be driver error by the bus driver, he said.
