Afghan President to meet Italian Premier in Rome

Afghan President Hamid Karzai will meet Italian Premier Romano Prodi today, as Italy prepares to hold a crucial vote in parliament over its troops in Afghanistan.

The meeting in Rome comes a day after US President George Bush said Nato allies needed to supply more soldiers to Afghanistan and be willing to send them into the most violent battles with Taliban fighters. Italy has a 1,800-strong contingent in Afghanistan.
