Black senator announces White House bid

A senator who would be America’s first black president if elected will formally announce his White House candidacy today in the state capital where he began his political career only 10 years ago.

Barack Obama is a newcomer to the national scene, having served just two years in the Senate, but he is already considered Senator Hillary Clinton’s chief rival among many vying for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 presidential election.
