Suspected rebels kill five in ambush in India

Suspected insurgents ambushed a government vehicle and shot three paramilitary soldiers dead, along with one Election Commission official and their civilian driver in India’s troubled north east today, police said.

The five were returning to the Ukhrul district headquarters in Manipur state with voting machines used a day earlier at a nearby polling station for the state legislature elections, said Dorji Lathu, the superintendent of police.

Another Central Reserve Police Force soldier in the vehicle was wounded in the attack in Kamjong, a village 75 miles east of Imphal, the state capital, Lathu told reporters.
