At least 39 killed in Iraq holy day violence

Shia worshippers in three Iraqi cities today suffered bombings and ambushes, killing at least 39 people, during the climax of ceremonies marking Ashoura, the holiest day in the Shia calendar.

In apparent retaliation, mortar shells slammed into predominantly Sunni neighbourhoods in Baghdad hours later, killing at least five people and wounding 20.
