At least 38 people have been killed in Iraq and dozens wounded when two bombs struck a predominantly Shiite commercial area in central Baghdad.

The first blast occurred shortly after noon local time when a bomb left in a bag placed among the stalls of vendors selling DVDs and second-hand clothes exploded in the Bab al-Sharqi area.

It was followed almost immediately by a parked car bomb just feet away.

Police said initial reports indicated that at least 38 people died and 62 were wounded.
