Surgeon confirms Castro 'does not have cancer'

Spanish surgeon Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido said today that Fidel Castro does not have cancer and that the Cuban leader is recovering slowly from a serious operation.

“He hasn’t got cancer", said the doctor at Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon Hospital, where he is chief surgeon.

Garcia Sabrido flew to Havana last Thursday to see the Cuban leader and give his opinion on how his treatment was progressing.

“It is not planned that he will undergo another operation for the moment,” he said. “His condition is stable. He is recovering from a very serious operation.”
