Abbas determined to go ahead with election

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas today defiantly insisted he will push ahead with his call for new elections, despite a wave of factional fighting that has left Gaza on the brink of chaos.

Receiving a boost from visiting prime minister Tony Blair, Abbas also reached out to Israel with a call for new peace talks in hopes that a breakthrough would give him an electoral edge over the radical Hamas group.
