Saddam attends trial despite pledge to stay away

Saddam Hussein attended his Baghdad trial for genocide against the Kurds today, a day after he told the chief judge that he no longer wanted to go to the Iraqi court.

The deposed Iraqi leader walked into the courtroom with a broad smile and took a seat alonside his six co-defendants. It was not clear what prompted him to be present.
