British prime minister Tony Blair has urged a stepping up of efforts to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a bid to end bloodshed in Iraq.

He told a commission re-thinking US policy that finding a solution to the problem would increase pressure on Iran and Syria to co-operate more widely.
