Hamas and Abbas close to deal on new government

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas travelled to Gaza today for negotiations with Hamas to put what he hoped will be the finishing touches on a national unity government made up of independent experts.

The movement toward a deal came as fighting in northern Gaza heated up on the sixth day of an Israeli offensive. At least seven Palestinians were killed, including a female suicide bomber.
